MICHAEL FOUNDATION - the Epilepsy Foundation

Epilepsy is very important to Harald Fey’s parents Peter and Susanne Fey, who founded the award. Susanne Fey was actively involved in support groups from 2001 to 2020. Initially, she was webmaster of the Landesverband Epilepsie Bayern e.V. (Bavarian Epilepsy Association) and its magazine 'epiKurier'. From 2002 to 2020, she was editor-in-chief of the magazine.
In October 2001, Susanne Fey was one of the founding members of the “epilepsie bundes-elternverband (e.b.e.)”. In 2003, she took over the management of the “e.b.e.” office, serving on its board until 2020 (as first chair from 2006 to 2020).
In 2019, Susanne Fey accepted the Sibylle Ried Prize, awarded by the MICHAEL FOUNDATION, on behalf of the ‘epilepsie bundes-elternverband’ .
In January 2020, she was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit on Ribbon for her long-standing and exceptional voluntary commitment in the field of epilepsy support group.

Susanne Fey contributed a very personal account to the 'SUDEP' brochure, which has been published by the MICHAEL FOUNDATION since 2019.

HARALD FEY PRIZE 2027

for an outstanding scientific paper or research project on SUDEP

The HARALD FEY Research PRIZE is awarded by the MICHAEL FOUNDATION for international research in memory of Harald Fey.
Harald Fey was the son of Susanne and Dr Peter Fey. On October 28th, 2007, Harald Fey died of SUDEP.

The HARALD FEY PRIZE is an award for outstanding scientific works investigating the causes, prevention and management of SUDEP. It can also be awarded as a research grant — for example, for planned or ongoing scientific projects or for travel to conferences aimed at stimulating research into SUDEP. The HARALD FEY PRIZE is aimed at researchers in the fields of medicine, (neuro)psychology and rehabilitation.

The prize is endowed with € 5,000. The prize may be shared. It is awarded every two years, usually at the joint annual conference of the German and Austrian Societies for Epileptology and the Swiss Epilepsy League.

The prize money is provided to the MICHAEL FOUNDATION by the Fey family through a donation.

Publications that have been published or accepted for publication

Documented activities or initiated trainings and further education

Project plans

Planned lecture tours to conferences

which aim at investigating the causes of and addressing SUDEP.

Applicants for the prize are requested to submit:

Published works or manuscripts accepted for publication (including the letter of acceptance)

Detailed project plan, including a budget

Details of the conference, including the program, organizers/hosts, and your own contribution, including a budget
CV of the applicant (or CVs of all group members in the case of a group application)

The publications, documentation, and projects to be submitted must demonstrate a clear connection to the subject of SUDEP.

The deadline for applications is the December 31^st, 2026.

After submitting your application, you will receive an email containing a password-protected link for uploading your work, documents, or supporting materials (preferably in PDF format).
